Dental Phobia Management at Smile Cliniq Dental Practice in Finchley and St John’s Wood

Do you have dental anxiety, dental fear or dental phobia? Are you frightened of going to the dentist? Do you avoid going to the dentist or do you keep your appointments and endure them with a good deal of stress? Do you feel embarrassed or ashamed of your fear or your mouth? Do you have your treatment with dental sedation or general anaesthetic? Are you looking for a dentist who really understands your problems?

If the answer to any of these questions is “Yes”, then we can help you at the Smile Cliniq dental practice, winners of Best Dentist London and UK, in Finchley and St John’s Wood.

Helen Chapman, our Dental Phobia Management Specialist, works at both these dental practices with the other staff to provide a specialised service for treating dental fear, dental anxiety and dental phobia. This includes specific problems like gagging.

Helen is trained in and has 15 years of experience in using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to treat dental anxiety and dental phobia. Do you want to visit a gentle dentist in the Finchley or St John’s Wood area? This is the ultimate way to achieve this as having control of how and when things happen is an integral part of treatment. If you have other problems such as chronic pain, GAD and OCD, Helen’s training means that she understands the impact of these conditions on your dental anxiety or dental phobia.

If you want effective treatment for your dental fear, dental anxiety or dental phobia, this is it. CBT is the NICE (National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence) approved treatment for specific phobias. To gain this status, there has to be scientific proof of the treatment’s effectiveness. A study just published in the scientific journal Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics[1]  found that long term improvement in dental fear, dental phobia or dental anxiety was more likely after treatment with CBT than hypnosis or general anaesthesia. (More people treated with hypnosis than CBT dropped out of the study before completing treatment.)

If you are interested in CBT for your dental anxiety or dental fear please ring the Finchley or St John’s Wood dental practice and arrange an appointment. This will involve getting a detailed understanding of your problem and will not involve any dental treatment.

Does Dental Implant Surgery Cost Less in Eastern Europe?

Some people may consider travelling abroad to have dental implants. However, going to countries such as Poland, Hungary and Romania for dental implants (tooth implants, teeth implants) works out more expensive than you will expect.

In fact, many Eastern European clinics charge more for implants, the crowns that go on top of the implants, and the CT scan that is sometimes required to place an implant.

It’s also important to keep in mind the cost of travelling to and from the country, as at least three visits are necessary for dental implant treatment. On top of that, you will most probably need to stay abroad for up to 24 days, which is the waiting time required for the prosthetics (crowns, bridges, dentures etc.) to be made at the dental laboratories. Staying for long periods abroad can be inconvenient as you will have to take days off work and the costs and hassle of finding accommodation may be stressful enough.

There are many extra costs often overlooked when comparing the overall cost of treatment in addition to the treatment cost, including:

  1. Return flights (several for complex dental restorations)
  2. Car travel (petrol)/ train fares to and from UK airports.
  3. UK airports parking charges
  4. Return taxi fares at the destination airport to hotel/car hire (and petrol) costs
  5. Return taxi fares from the hotel to the clinic (if not using a car)
  6. Hotel accommodation (for up to 24 days for complex implant restorations)
  7. Restaurant and bar bills
  8. Holiday time off work
  9. Travelling back to the country when facing problems with implant, once treatment has finished.

Other consideration with Dental Implant Treatment in Eastern Europe

  1. Are foreign dentists as strictly regulated as UK dentists?
  2. Do foreign dentists have the same level of insurance cover as UK dentists?
  3. What happens if there is a post-operative problem? A patient would need to return to the foreign clinic, since most UK dentists refuse to take over and assume responsibility, especially if the treatment was poorly done.
  4. Will a foreign dentist rectify badly done treatment free of charge?
  5. If the foreign dentist refuses to rectify any faults, how are you going to claim against him?
  6. Are patients prepared to sue a foreign dentist in a foreign court?
  7. What about after-care? Patients have to travel abroad again for this, since most UK dentists refuse to take over the responsibility after treatment is done in a foreign clinic.
  8. What is the quality of the dental implants that they use abroad?

At Smile Cliniq Dental Practice, we offer efficient, high quality dental implants treatment at affordable prices, carried out by Dentists with extended training in Dental Implants. Inman Aligner

What is an Inman Aligner?

The Inman Aligner is a cost-effective removable orthodontic appliance that moves teeth in a fraction of the time of other systems. It aligns crowded or protruding anterior teeth with two opposing spring loaded aligner bars. This provides gentle but continuous pressure and can produce a large range of movement. Surprisingly, this gentle pressure is the quickest way to move teeth but it also makes treatment very safe and kind to teeth.

People love the speed of treatment and it’s changing the face of dentistry as we know it. The average treatment time is only 6-16 weeks and now with concerns over the economy it’s a more affordable solution.

The Inman Aligner is now available in North London at Smile Cliniq.

How does it work?
The Inman Aligner uses a lingual coil spring that puts pressure on the teeth that need straightening and a labial bar that reverses the same pressure. These devices work together to squeeze the teeth together by pushing and pulling them into position.

What’s the difference between Inman Aligners and other orthodontic appliances?
Fixed and clear braces such as Invisalign work well however, in certain cases the Inman Aligner can work more quickly and effectively and you can have your front teeth straightened in as little as 6-16 weeks. Simple cases can be finished in just over a month and more severe cases can be as little as four months. Normally the front lower teeth tend to move a little faster than the front upper teeth.

For more information on Inman Aligners and other orthodontic appliances offered at our North London Practice such as Invisalign and conventional orthodontic braces, please visit our website.

If you are interested in having your teeth straightened with Inman Aligners, or are unsure which orthodontic treatment would be best suited for your teeth, feel free to book a FREE consultation with the dentist on 0208 343 1133.

Vaccine to treat gum disease on the way

There is news of a development of a vaccine to treat periodontitis, a serious and common disease, where gum disease has progressed to cause bone loss and severe inflammation, often resulting in teeth to fall out.

Researchers claim that the vaccine works by targeting the ‘ring leader’ of a group of bacteria that cause periodontitis, called Porphyromonas gingivalis, to trigger an immune response against the bacteria.

Such news of a solution for a problem that has troubled dentists for years seems great to me, but I guess there is no underestimating the power of technology that we have today.

The vaccines are being trialled in mouse models of periodontal disease and following a positive response, a vaccine will progress to clinical trials.

However, it may take years for this vaccine to be used in the clinical environment. In the meanwhile, treatment of periodontitis by a periodontist is available at Smile Cliniq, which has proven to show impressive improvements in gum disease and the general oral health.

If you would like to know more about the services we provide in treating gum disease, feel free to contact us on 02083431133.

Hidden costs of treatment abroad highlighted

Approximately 259,000 Britons between 16 and 64 have dental treatment abroad every year because they believe it is cheaper, according to a new survey.

Dentale, the dental implant training clinic, warns that the ‘true’ cost of certain dental treatments abroad can be more expensive than the UK. Research conducted by Dentale suggests that because of the recession, the number of people having dental work abroad could increase.

Although many people think that they can save money by doing this, Dentale warns that depending on the dental treatment required, it could end up being more expensive due to the costs of hotels and flights for multiple visits.

The research shows that between 2004 and 2008, 779,000 men and 514,000 women aged between 16 and 64 had dental treatment abroad because they believed they would save money. Some 67% of these people were aged under 34.

Jason Buglass, managing director of Dentale and a UK qualified dentist, said ‘It is important that when people are looking to go abroad for dental treatment that they not only investigate the cost of the procedure, but also the other added expenses such as hotels, flights and how many times they will have to see the dentist before the treatment is complete. In the case of dental implants, you need to make a number of follow-up visits and if your dentist is in another country this can not only be very time consuming but also costly.’

Another thing to bear in mind is the risk of the treatment failing. For example if a person goes to another country for an implant, and the implant fails to integrate with the bone and falls out, then they will have to return back to the dentist when there is no guarantee of a solution to the problem. This also adds cost and time and most of all stress to the person, which may have been unknown if carried out by a certified, well educated, local dentist.

Has reading this article made you rethink your ideas of having treatment abroad? Of course, some may have very reliable and trustworthy dentists abroad that they would bet their lives on. But remember, there is always a risk. Unless you are prepared for the consequences, our advice at Smile Cliniq would be to keep the health of your mouth in the hands of a local dentist that you trust.

If you would like further information regarding low cost Dental Implant treatment options in London, please contact the Smile Cliniq team on 02083431133 or info@smilecliniq.com.  For more information on Dental Implant treatment in London please visit our dental implant page.

Early births reduced by gum disease treatment

Recent studies have shown that treatment of periodontal disease in pregnant women significantly reduced the risk of premature birth.

The research showed that women with periodontal disease were over three times more likely to give birth prematurely than women with good oral health and had a one in four chance of giving birth before 35 weeks.

Pregnant women with gum disease were treated with scaling and root plaining, and a periodontal examination was carried out before and after treatment. The results of the study showed that subjects who were successfully treated for their periodontal disease had significantly lower incidence of preterm birth less than 35 weeks gestation.

During pregnancy, the mother’s gums tend to become more inflamed and sensitive to plaque due to hormone changes. Therefore it is important to maintain your oral health by visiting the hygienist or dentist for a clean, as now we know that it can have an important impact on the health of the baby. Please look through our teeth cleaning guide which has video on how to brush your teeth and gums.  Also please read through our Gum Disease page for more information on the cause of gum disease and possible treatments.

With the above in mind, why not take an advantage of our periodontal services! At Smile Cliniq in Finchley, North London, George – our periodontist, is here to help you if you have any problems with you gums. So if you have any doubts please don’t hesitate to speak to one of our dentists today and if necessary we will arrange for you to see him in order to prevent future complications.
