There is news of a development of a vaccine to treat periodontitis, a serious and common disease, where gum disease has progressed to cause bone loss and severe inflammation, often resulting in teeth to fall out.
Researchers claim that the vaccine works by targeting the ‘ring leader’ of a group of bacteria that cause periodontitis, called Porphyromonas gingivalis, to trigger an immune response against the bacteria.
Such news of a solution for a problem that has troubled dentists for years seems great to me, but I guess there is no underestimating the power of technology that we have today.
The vaccines are being trialled in mouse models of periodontal disease and following a positive response, a vaccine will progress to clinical trials.
However, it may take years for this vaccine to be used in the clinical environment. In the meanwhile, treatment of periodontitis by a periodontist is available at Smile Cliniq, which has proven to show impressive improvements in gum disease and the general oral health.
